Stations of the Cross Prayers

God gives special blessings to those who symbolically follow Christ in His journey from the court of Pilate to death on the cross and burial.

You can obtain these blessings by thoughtful meditation at each of the Stations of the Cross. To help you focus your thoughts, this webpage contains readings and prayers appropriate to your reflection and prayer at home.

Before the First Station, read the following: “They were now on their way, going up to Jerusalem: and Jesus was walking on in front of them, and they were in dismay, and those who followed were afraid. And again taking the Twelve, he began to tell them what would happen to him, saying, ‘Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and the Scribes; and they will condemn him to death, and will deliver him to the Gentiles; and they will mock him, and spit upon him, and scourge him, and put him to death; and on the third day he will rise again.’ “

MARK 10:32-34

Alternate readings:
Matthew 16:21-27;
Luke 12:22-34;

First Station:

JESUS IS CONDEMNED TO DEATH.

PRAYER: We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

He came unto his own. And his own received him not. I shall not die, but live; and declare the works of the Lord. Lord Jesus crucified, have mercy on us.

Second Station:

JESUS TAKES UP HIS CROSS.

PRAYER: We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

He humbled himself becoming obedient unto death, even to death on a cross. And he bore the sins of many. And prayed for transgressors. Lord Jesus crucified, have mercy on us.

Third Station:

JESUS FALLS THE FIRST TIME.

PRAYER: We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of Jesus Christ. We thought of him as a leper, as one afflicted and struck by God. Lord Jesus crucified, have mercy on us.

Fourth Station:

JESUS MEETS HIS MOTHER MARY.

PRAYER: We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Your own soul a sword shall pierce, that the thoughts of many may be revealed. This child is destined for the fall and rise of many, and for a sign that shall be contradicted. Lord Jesus crucified, have mercy on us.

Fifth Station:

SIMON OF CYRENE HELPS TO CARRY JESUS’ CROSS.

PRAYER: We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

With Christ I am nailed to the cross. I live no longer, but Christ lives in me. Rescue me from my enemies, for in you I hope. Lord Jesus crucified, have mercy on us.

Sixth Station:

VERONICA WIPES THE FACE OF JESUS.

PRAYER: We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Be you imitators of Christ and walk in love, as Christ loved us and delivered himself up for us. May God have pity on us and bless us, may he let his face to shine upon us. Lord Jesus crucified, have mercy on us.

Seventh Station:

JESUS FALLS THE SECOND TIME.

PRAYER: We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

It was for our iniquities that he was wounded, for our sins he was bruised. Unless the grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains alone. But if it dies, it brings forth much fruit. Lord Jesus crucified, have mercy on us.

Eighth Station:

JESUS SPEAKS TO THE WOMEN OF JERUSALEM.

PRAYER: We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. I will remember the tender mercies of the Lord, I will proclaim the praise of the Lord, for all he bestowed on us. Lord Jesus crucified, have mercy on us.

Ninth Station:

JESUS FALLS THE THIRD TIME.

PRAYER: We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Surely he has borne our infirmities, and carried our sorrows. He gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from the wickedness of the present world. Lord Jesus crucified, have mercy on us.

Tenth Station:

JESUS IS STRIPPED OF HIS CLOTHING.

PRAYER: We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Upon him lay the chastisement that brought us peace. By his bruises we are healed. You know, you were redeemed, with the precious blood of Christ, as of a Lamb. Lord Jesus crucified, have mercy on us.

Eleventh Station:

JESUS IS NAILED TO THE CROSS.

PRAYER: We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

He was offered because it was his own will, and he opened not his mouth. The Son of Man must be lifted up, that those who believe in him might not perish. Lord Jesus crucified, have mercy on us.

Twelfth Station:

JESUS DIES ON THE CROSS.

PRAYER: We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Christ died once for our sins, that he might bring us to God. We have been sanctified, through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ. Lord Jesus crucified, have mercy on us.

Thirteenth Station:

JESUS IS TAKEN DOWN FROM THE CROSS.

PRAYER: We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

Purge out the old leaven, for Christ, our Passover, has been sacrificed. Because he laid down his life for sin, He shall see a long-lived posterity. Lord Jesus crucified, have mercy on us.

Fourteenth Station:

JESUS IS LAID IN THE TOMB.

PRAYER: We adore you, O Christ, and we bless you because by your holy cross you have redeemed the world.

You will arise and have mercy on Sion. For it is a time to pity her. If we have been united with him in the likeness of his death, so shall we be in the likeness of his resurrection. Lord Jesus crucified, have mercy on us.

Afterwards:

“But the angel spoke and said to the women, `Do not be afraid; for I know that you seek Jesus, who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen even as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord was laid. And go quickly, tell his disciples that he was risen; and behold, he goes before you into Galilee; there you shall see him. Behold, I have foretold it to you.’ “And they departed quickly from the tomb in fear and great joy and ran to tell his disciples. And behold, Jesus met them, saying, `Hail!’ And they came up and embraced his feet and worshipped him. Then Jesus said to them, `Do not be afraid; go, take word to my brethren that they are to set out for Galilee; there they shall see me. “Now while they were going, behold some of the guard came into the city and reported to the chief priests all that had been done.”

LET US PRAY.

Oh God, we have seen how you worked our salvation through the sufferings, death, and resurrection of your son, Jesus Christ; teach us to unite our trials and sorrows to His sufferings and death, so that we may likewise share in the joy and glory of His resurrection. We ask this grace through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

FINAL PRAYER:

If Christ has not risen, then vain is our preaching, vain too our faith. He who raised Jesus Christ from the dead, will also bring to life our mortal bodies. I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me, even if he dies, shall live. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
